16th International Young Geomorphologists’ Meeting of the German Young Geomorphologists (24-26th June 2022)

The German Young Geomorphologists are organising the 16th International Young Geomorphologists’ Meeting, on 24th to 26th of June 2022! This event will be held in person, in Bad Kreuznach (Germany).

The meeting will be an opportunity for young researchers in Geomorphology (and related fields) to present their work of BSc, MSc and PhD during oral or poster sessions. The meeting will provide a forum to promote fruitful discussions with other young scientists, to solve any issue you are encountering, or simply to have feedback on your work!

In addition, a field trip will be held to learn about the geomorphological context of the surroundings of Bad Kreuznach. Keynote lectures will also be given by Prof. Dr. Wilfried Haeberli and PD Dr. Tobias Ullmann, on various topics in geomorphology. You can also register to attend the workshop on “Digital Terrain Methods” that will take place after the meeting, on 27th June.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 6-9th December 2021)

Marin Mićunović and Marta Zocchi were awarded grants of 300€ each to attend the Post-Graduate Training Workshop organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG). With this grant, they stayed four days in Windsor (UK) at the Cumberland Lodge. Their full reports can be found in PDF here:

Overall, they had a very good time at the workshop. Marin’s report highlights the diversity of activities: lectures, group meeting, practical work in programming/modelling, discussions about writing & publishing papers… He also enjoyed the numerous “coffee/tea breaks or meeting in the lodge bar”, that allowed to “make new contacts, build friendships, and share ideas and plans”. Marin and Marta both emphasized the organisation, as well as the atmosphere which was “friendly”, with a “warm welcome”. Marta ends her report saying that she “highly recommend(s) this splendid experience”.

IAG Grants for the Youth Symposium “Geomorphology in Quaternary Research”, June 28th – July 1st 2022

The Inqua Peribaltic Working Group (PWG) and the Polish Association of Geomorphologists with the IAG are supporting the organisation the first PWG Youth Symposium on the topic of “Geomorphology in Quaternary Research” on June 28th – July 1st (more details here).

The IAG is happy to announce that two grants of 300 € each will be awarded to two Young Geomorphologists to attend this event in person. Candidates for the IAG grants are requested to submit the following files before February 28th, 2022:

Report on the IGI YGF 2nd Intensive Training Program for the Young Geomorphologists

The Young Geomorphologists Forum (YGF) of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) organised its 2nd Intensive Training Program for Young Geomorphologists. The conveners were Dr. Sayantan DAS (Department of Geography, Dum Dum Motijheel College, India) and Dr. Suvendu ROY (Department of Geography, KGTM, India).

This event was held online on 1-2 November 2021, with 8 courses divided into 4 technical sessions covering various topics like Paleoclimate, Geochronology or Natural Hazards.

In all, 240 Young Geomorphologists attended this Program: 177 from India, and 63 coming from 32 different countries. Find the full report of Surajit KUNDU here.

Windsor, UK, 6-9th December 2021

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers 2 grants of 300 (three-hundred) Euros to PhD STUDENTS in GEOMORHOLOGY from EUROPE (except UK) who are willing to take part in the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 6-9th December 2021). PhD students at an early stage of their PhD programme are encouraged to apply. The Workshop is organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and recognised by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). The course will provide PhD students with elements of training for research and with an opportunity to meet others at an early stage of their training when they were wrestling with the problems of research design etc.

The workshop has been running at the fantastic Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over 30 years – many notable researchers and academics have been and benefited from this course!

The content is non-technical, but provides training in project management, group work, dealing with large data sets, fieldwork, lab and numerical modelling, gaining funding as well as publication and future career development. Students will also meet a wide variety of academics and facilitators who are practicing researchers as well as the BSG postgrad representatives on the Executive. The BSG chair normally gives an entertaining evening talk.

Reports by Grant Holders – IAG Grants for RCG in Athens (19-21 September 2019)

Eight Young Geomorphologists were awarded grants by the IAG to attend the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology (from 19 to 21 September 2019), as well as the 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course (from 22 to 27 September). Both were about “Geomorphology of Climatically and Tectonically sensitive areas”, and took place in Athens (Greece). Find five reports here:

As highlights on the Conference, Sayantan emphasises the organisation: “The program scheduling was efficiently handled by Prof. Niki Evelpidou and her team from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. A special acknowledgement is due for the group of students and scholars of the university, who worked relentlessly to make this event a success.” Sujay found that the four keynotes lectures “were without exception outstanding in content and presentation and was a real highlight of the conference”, a feeling shared by Pedro.

Overall, all Grant Holders praise the great organisation and content of the Intensive Course. Bachtiar highlights that this Course held “in a friendly environment” and allowed them to practise “lots of activities”. Shreya even states: “that training programme was the best training programme I had ever attended”.

CALL for GRANTS for the Mid-European Geomorphology Meeting 2021

The IAG announces the offering of 2 grants of 300€ to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in Germany, Austria and Switzerland), among those who applied to attend in person the Mid-European Geomorphology Meeting 2021 (Munich, Germany, 6-9 November 2021). The meeting will propose regular scientific sessions (6/7 November), with presentations focused on Geomorphology in a changing climate, but also on recent progress in various methods and techniques applied to geomorphology, such as dating, geophysical investigations, modelling, remote sensing… Other sessions will be audience-driven discussions on a broad range of subjects around geomorphology. The scientific sessions period will be followed by a Post-Conference Field Trip (8/9 November), focused on Pleniglacial and Lateglacial geomorphology, around many study sites (Ammersee, Karst Wetterstein Mountains, Zugspitze…).  For more information on the conference, including its program, click here.

Reports by Grant Holders – 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration

The International Association of Geomorphologists funded the participation of two young Planetary Geomorphologists in the 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration held in Ushuaia, Argentina, 13-17 January 2020. The Conference was the latest in a continuing series of conferences intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas regarding the polar regions of Mars. The focus was also on terrestrial analogs that enhance the interpretation of remote sensing data from Mars, and on concepts for future missions. The IAG allocated 2 grants of 500€ that were awarded to the following candidates:

Report on 1st Intensive Training Programme for the Young Geomorphologists of India

The Young Geomorphologists Forum (YGF) was established under the banner of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists in November 2019. The IGI‒YGF organized a 4 day long Intensive Training Programme for The Young Geomorphologists of India from 2nd to 5th March 2020 in the Department of Geography, University of Calcutta, Kolkata–700019, India. Dr. Shreya Bandyopadhyay (President, IGI-YGF and Assistant Professor, Maharaja Nandakumar Mahavidyalaya, Vidyasagar University) and Dr. Sayantan Das (Vice-President, IGI-YGF and Assistant Professor, Dum Dum Motijheel College, West Bengal State University) were the event conveners. The event marked the newly launched ‘International Geomorphology Week’ for 2020.

The following are the highlights from the programme:
– 7 lectures
– 2 laboratory-based hands on exercises
– 1 field-based hands on exercise
– A day-long Field visit to the coastal areas of West Bengal, India

In all, 70 young geomorphologists from different parts of India attended this event. The participants came from nine states of India and a total of 24 universities and organisations were represented. Please see here for a full report.

CALL for GRANTS International Rock Coast Conference 2020

The International Association of Geomorphologists offers 1 grant of 400 euros to favour the participation of Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in Italy) in the International Rock Coast Conference 2020 (Trieste, Italy, 27-28 August 2020). The meeting is intended as a forum to discuss advances in the study of rock coasts and will include a range of presentations relevant to Rock Coast Geomorphology. The organizing committee, part of the IAG Working Group on Rocky Coasts, will review proposed papers and posters titles and abstracts, and, if successful the author(s) will be invited to present their work at the Conference.

Applications from candidates who already achieved one or more IAG grants totalling 500 euros or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible.

CALL for GRANTS 4th International Symposium of Living with Landscapes

The International Association of Geomorphologists offers 1 grant of 270 euros to favour the participation of Young Geomorphologists* based in Europe and Africa (except Egypt) in the 4th International Symposium of Living with Landscapes (Dahab, South Sinai, Egypt, 1-5 November 2020). The Symposium is organized by the Egyptian Society of Environmental Change (ESEC) with the auspices of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG).

Secondly, the call is extended to other YGs* from countries among the National Members of IAG with a regular position (payments of annual fees).

Applications from candidates who already achieved one or more IAG grants totalling 500 euros or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible.

From Francis: “Upon arrival, the impressive buildings and outdoor grounds set a relaxing scene and give the feeling of being on a quintessential English country estate. After an initial gathering on Monday afternoon over one of many cups of tea and cake, we were given a talk about the rich history of Cumberland Lodge…”

From Gregor “Twenty-two early PhD students stayed in a royal ambience and we philosophized about the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of our PhD projects.”

From Francis: “Alongside important learning, the workshop gave the brilliant opportunity to have fun and bond with other PhD colleagues”

From Gregor: “Delicious food as well as tea in the afternoon and beer in the evening offered the perfect framework to exchange ideas, network with fellow PhD students and chat about life in academia. “

The International Association of Geomorphologists offered 2 grants of 500 euros to favour the participation of Planetary Geomorphologists in the 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration organized by the Planetary Science Institute- York University and the Space Research and Planetary Sciences-University of Bern, among others, with the support of the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Cientificas (CADIC-CONICET). The Conference is the latest in a continuing series of conferences intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas regarding the polar regions of Mars. The focus will also be on terrestrial analogs that can enhance the interpretation of remote sensing data from Mars, and on concepts for future missions.

The cost of the course is heavily subsidised for BSG postgraduate research members (non members need to join the BSG at the excellent value postgraduate rate of £45 for four years). This provides full evening meals, lunches, tea/coffee breaks (Monday afternoon to Thursday lunchtime) and accommodation in the ‘up market’ environment of Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. As well as being a former home to royalty, Cumberland lodge features in several feature films including the Kings Speech.

The International Association of Geomorphologists offers 2 grants of 500 euros to favour the participation of Young Geomorphologists* (Planetary Geomorphologists) from Latin America but not mainly based in Argentina in the 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration organized by the Planetary Science Institute- York University and the Space Research and Planetary Sciences-University of Bern, among others, with the support of the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Cientificas (CADIC-CONICET).

Secondly, the call is extended to other YGs* (Planetary Geomorphologists) from the National Members of IAG with a regular position (annual fees have been paid and are therefore listed on our website).

Applications from candidates who already achieved one or more IAG grants totalling 500 euros or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible.

Call for Grants for the 12th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP 2020)

Permafrost environments under persistent warming: Challenges for scientific assessment and engineering practice

Through the IPA-IAG Agreement, the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers 2 travel grants of 300 euros to Early Career Researchers to take part in the 12th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP 2020) to be held 22-26 June 2020 in Lanzhou, China. The International Permafrost Association (IPA) will cover the conference registration fee of the grant winners.

The grants will be devoted to support the active participation (oral or poster presentation) of 2 Early Career Researchers* whose interests intersect with those of the two associations, generally in the area of permafrost and periglacial geomorphology.

The submission and acceptance of an abstract and the active participation in the conference (with oral or poster presentation) are mandatory to receive this support. Early career researchers based in the organizing country for the international conference are not eligible for this support.

Applicants are requested to submit the following documents by 15 January 2020:

  • Copy of valid passport or identity card
  • Short CV (maximum 2 pages long), including up to 10 papers related to the Conference themes
  • Abstract submitted to the conference.

The 12th International Conference on Permafrost will be held in Lanzhou, China on the Lanzhou University Campus. Lanzhou is the permafrost research hub of China and the location of the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute and the State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering, both groups of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The conference will include scientific sessions, keynote lectures, and a Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) workshop held before the conference. There will be a local field trip day during the conference, and multiple multi-day field trips following the conference covering the following areas: the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Northeast China, the Qilian Mountains, and the Ordos Loess Plateau.

Report on the 8th edition of Italian Young Geomorphologists’ days

The VIII edition of Italian Young Geomorphologists’ days “Sharing experiences on geomorphological research in different morphogenetic and morphoclimatic environments” was held from 26th to 28th June 2019 at the Sala Napoleonica, University of Milan, and at Veny Valley (AO). The congress was jointly organized by Italian Association of Physical Geography and Geomorphology (AIGeo), Earth Sciences Department of University of Milan and Earth Sciences Department of University of Turin, under the auspices of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG), Italian Geological Society (SGI), Italian Galciological Committee (CGI) and Italian Association for Quaternary Research (AIQUA), and sponsored by Beta Analytic.

The meeting was attended by a total number of about 80 participants, of which about 60 were young geomorphologists, from 11 different countries (Austria; Brazil; Costa Rica; France; Greece; India; Italy; Poland; Romania; Russia; Switzerland). Moreover, 7 grants were awarded by the IAG to young geomorphologists coming from all over the world. Reports from Anita Bernatek-Jakiel, Elisa Giaccone, Anna Karkani, Nicusor Necula and Adolfo Quesada-Román can be accessed by clicking on their names. On 26th the opening of the congress was followed by a key note held by the IAG president Prof. M. Soldati and Dr. M. Della Seta (IAG training officer) about the training program of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG): state of the art and outlook for the future.

During the afternoon two sessions of oral presentations and one poster session occurred. The oral presentation sessions are about “Glacial and periglacial dynamics”, held by Dr. R.S. Azzoni and Prof. A. Zerboni, and “Geomorphological hazard assessment”, held by Dr. A. Masseroli and Prof. M. Fort, for a total of 8 oral presentations. The 46 contributions were presented during the miscellaneous poster session held by Dr. I.M. Bollati and Prof. M. Soldati.

After the scientific sessions, the meeting participants moved to the City Centre for the Social Dinner.

On 27th the morning sessions starts with a key note about “Postglacial Relative Sea-Level databases from near- to intermediate-field regions. A key tool to quantify the on-going isostatic signal and future sea level rise along global coastlines” held by Dr. M. Vacchi.

During the morning two oral presentation session took place: the first was about “Coastal dynamics” held by Dr. M. Vacchi. and Dr. G. Amato and the second was about “Fluvial and Lacustrine dynamics” held by Dr. G.S. Mariani and Dr. M. Materazzi, for a total of 7 oral presentations. In the afternoon, the election of AIGeo Junior Council took place and the new elected coordinators are: Mauro Bonasera, Ciro Cerrone, Anna Masseroli and Mariacristina Prampolini. Successively, the meeting of the YGs national delegates on “Building the IAG Network of Young Geomorphologists’ Groups “, supported by the IAG,  took place. During the meeting the YGs national delegates, financially supported by IAG, coming from 7 countries (Costa Rica-A. Quesada-Román; France- A. Dousseron; Greece- A. Karkani; Italy-C. Cerrone; Poland- A. Bernatek-Jakiel; Romania- N. Necula; Switzerland-E. Giaccone) and all the meeting participants discussed about the future role of young geomorphologist in IAG with Prof. M. Soldati and Dr. S. Conway.

On 27th June afternoon, as soon as the meeting and election of the AIGeo Junior Council & Meeting of the YGs’ delegates finished, about 40 participants from Italy, Switzerland, Romania, Costa Rica, France, India, Russia, Austria and Brazil moved to Courmayeur (Valle d’Aosta Region, Italy) by bus. We were hosted in shared rooms at “Rifugio Monte Bianco”, located at 1700 m a.s.l. and surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of the Mont Blanc massif.

After a delicious traditional dinner, Susan Conway from the Universitè de Nantes took an interesting “lesson under the stars” on the geomorphological “Mars-forms”, to discover periglacial geomorphology from the Alps to … Mars!

The following day, the field-trip, organized by the University of Turin, along the Veny Valley on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif (4808 m a.s.l.), NW-Alps, took place starting from the Rifugio.

The field trip started with an introduction on the main geological and geomorphological aspects held by Prof. M. Giardino (University of Turin) and Prof. Philip Deline (University of Savoie Mont Blanc). Then we moved along the “Sentiero Balcone” (Balcony path), an ideal trail, following the right hydrographic side of the Veny Valley, that allows to have a very good view not only of the Miage Glacier, the most important debris covered glacier of the Italian Alps, but also of others landforms and processes such as glacial cirques, moraines and landslides. From the Balcony, we saw a clearly ongoing active process of rock avalanche!!

Successively, we descended to the Plan Combal to see closely the moraines of the Miage and discuss the recent evolution, in terms of retreatment, of the glacier.

Finally, we saw the ice cliff and the Miage lake (2700m a.s.l.) actually separated into three different subbasin. Hydrological issues related to glacier and lake interaction were also illustrated. From the lake, we concluded our field trip at the bottom of the fluvioglacial plain of the la Visaille having a look, during the descent, on lateral moraines and mass wasting phenomena that are still active.

Grants awarded to Young Geomorphologists for RCG2019 Athens Sept 2019

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG) has awarded 8 grants to Young Geomorphologists to take part in the Regional Conference on Geomorphology to be held in Athens 19-21 September 2019. All of them will take part in the IAG-EGU Intensive Course (22nd – 27th Sept 2019).

The AIGeo offers grants to attend VIII Young Geomorphologists’ Days

The Italian Association of Physical Geography and Geomorphology offers the following grants* for Young Geomorphologists (not older than 35 years):
A – 2 grants of 500 euros to young geomorphologists coming from outside Europe;
B – 3 grants of 250 euros to young geomorphologists coming from Europe (not Italy);
C – 2 grants of 100 euros to young geomorphologists coming from Italy.

The aim is to support the participation of foreign and Italian young geomorphologists in the VIII Young Geomorphologists’ Days that will be held in Milan and Veny Valley (Mount Blanc Massif) 26th-28th, June 2019. For details and for how to apply see the AIGeo site here.

Call for IAG Grants – the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology Athens 19-21 Sept 2019

CALL for IAG GRANTS for the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology: Geomorphology of Climatically and Tectonically sensitive areas

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) is offering a number of grants for YOUNG GEOMORPHOLOGISTS (under 35 yrs old) who are willing to take part in the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology (Athens, Greece, 19-21 September 2019) and related 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists (Hellenic Centre for Marine Research Faculties, Anavyssos Attica and Harokopio University of Athens, 22-27 September 2019).

The grants are offered to Young Geomorphologists from less-favoured countries worldwide (with a Purchasing Power Parity below 22,000 international dollars, according to the World Development Indicators database, World Bank, revised 21 September 2018). For details see here. For countries with unavailable PPP in international dollars for 2018, please refer either to the US dollars column or to tables released in previous years by the World Bank.

The Regional Conference on Geomorphology will take place in Athens. Organized by the Greek Committee for Geomorphology & Environment of the Geological Association of Greece and open to all scientists and practitioners, it will include scientific sessions and keynote lectures as well as the 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists dealing with ‘Coastal geomorphology of climatically and tectonically sensitive areas’. Field trips will be arranged in various islands of the Aegean Sea, both before and after the Conference.

The funds allocated by the IAG to support Young Geomorphologists are 6000 euros. In addition, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) has allocated a budget to co-sponsor the 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists. The amount of single grants will depend on the country of origin (or place of residence) and on estimated financial needs of the grant winners. The grants are intended to cover (at least partially) travel costs to and from Athens, accommodation during the Conference and fee of the Intensive Course. In addition, the Organizing Committee will waive the Conference registration fee. The participation in the Intensive Course is highly recommended and the intention to participate in the Course will be considered as a preferential title in the selection of the applicants. Applicants should have a special interest and research experience in the themes of both the Conference and the Intensive Course, to be proved by their CV.

Report on 11th Workshop of Polish Young Geomorphologists Oct 2018

11th Workshop of Polish Young Geomorphologists: ‘Modelling and visualization of 3D forms, phenomena and geomorphic processes’ 

The eleventh edition of Polish Young Geomorphologists Workshops, whose main initiator and co-organizer was the Association of Polish Geomorphologists (APG), was held on October 22-24, 2018, at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. Sixteen young students of geomorphology took part in the meeting entitled ‘Modelling and visualization of 3D forms, phenomena and geomorphic processes’. The participants represented the University of Łódź, the University of Wrocław, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

The idea of the workshop was to introduce participants with the most recent research trends focused on the high-definition field surveys, modelling and visualization of landforms, geomorphic phenomena and processes and acquiring knowledge in the field of research planning and organizing, strategies for raising funds, rules for submitting of research projects, as well as rules of preparation of lectures and scientific publications.

The workshop program included three days of training with varied formats, which were linked by two main themes. The first ‘Analysis of the stability of slope sediments’, conducted by dr Piotr Demczuk, was devoted to the methodology for testing slope sediments and their numerical analysis in the context of landslide hazard, using geotechnical tools. The second ‘Geomodelling the loess gullies’, led by prof. Grzegorz Janicki – included practical training using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS & 3D technology). President of Association of Polish Geomorphologists – prof. Małgorzata Mazurek – presented a historical draft of the origin and development of the Association and the functioning and scope of its activities, with particular attention to the place of young adepts of science in the structure of this organization. In addition, as part of the lecture of prof. Piotr Migoń (University of Wrocław), workshop participants had the opportunity to learn about the history, structure and functioning of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG), and listeners learnt about the benefits resulting from activities within this organization. Workshop participants found out more about planning and organization of scientific research presented by prof. Zbigniew Zwoliński (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) as well as strategy of raising research funding and rules for the preparation of research projects – led by prof. Piotr Migoń. Each of the participants presented the concept of their own research project. The workshop program also included issues related to the preparation of scientific publications and rules for their review – prepared by dr Anna Orłowska.

In the summary of the meeting, attention was paid to the important role played by such meetings in the scientific development of every researcher. The workshops ended with handing over the certificates of the completion of the 11th Young Geomorphologists’ Workshop and an invitation for their next edition, which will take place in 2019 at the University of Łódź.

From Lidia “we had the occasion to present our own PhD project, with students that have similar interests. In my opinion, this was a real useful session, because we presented the project in a small group and we had time to share experiences and advices”

“In fact, not only the ‘organized’ talks were fundamental, but also the tasty coffee breaks or the after dinners, when, in front a cup of tea or playing a match at the ping pong table, I had the occasion to talk informally with professors, to get to know other students better and to share with them experiences, fears and ideas.”

From Giulia “The most remarkable thing is the possibility of public speaking: I have prepared two talks about my PhD project, one presented to all attendees and the other one to a small group, giving you suggestions or asking questions. Moreover, a third talk has been prepared with other students: it is a great experience in which you have to present a research project about a topic far from your area of interest and within only two hours.”

“Besides the public speaking, you have also the opportunity of knowing the PhD experiences of the Post-doctoral researchers, which give you precious advice and report their personal challenges and opportunities, also considering the mental stress and health connecting problems.”

8th Italian Young Geomorphologists’ Days

The abstract submission is now open for the VIII Italian Young Geomorphologists’ Days supported by the IAG. The meeting will focus on “Sharing experiences on geomorphological research in different morphogenetic and morphoclimatic environments”. It will take place from 26th to 28th June 2019. The meeting comprises 2 days of scientific presentations (26th and 27th June) at the prestigious Sala Napoleonica of the University of Milan, and 1 day (28th June) will be dedicated to the fieldtrip in the Veny Valley (Mont Blanc Massif) focusing on mountain environments dynamics, mapping and monitoring, guided by University of Turin.

I would like to thank the International Association of Geomorphologists for the student travel grants to participate in the 7o Congreso Argentino de Cuaternario y Geomorfología, “Geocuar 2018” organized by Argentine Association of Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies (AACG). During the conference I met Dra Andrea Coronato, and after we talked about the intentions of IAG, I become member of the Argentine group.  My idea now is to become an active member in both groups (Brazilian and Argentine) to promote the IAG initiatives between the Young Geormophologists.

In the conference I presented my work in the Antropoceno poster session, I was also able to attended the mid-day field trip, the short course about Biomineralization and environmental studies (class by Dra. Margarita Osterrieth and Dra Natalia Borrelli), and the post-meeting field trip in the Peninsula Valdés region. I am glad to announce that I received the premium of best poster presentation in the Antropoceno session where I could share my experience with analysis of Pb isotopes in marine bivalve shells by LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), using bivalve shells as a proxy of Pb pollution to address the source of lead pollution in marine ecosystems.

In brief, the IAG student travel grants promotes a chance to culturally enrich both professional and personal experiences. It comes as a benefit to the Young Geormophologists careers and promoting a good opening to meet new people. Finally, I would like to share some pictures of “Geocuar 2018” meeting with the members of IAG.

My experience at the GEOCUAR 2018 conference was very enriching. On the one hand I gained experience in the poster presentation, but more important than that was the contact and relationship with colleagues of other nationalities who work on similar topics but who have different perspectives and experiences. With regard to the organization, I would like to greet and congratulate those in charge who made everything excellent, both in the presentations and poster sessions, as well as in the meals, in the camaraderie dinner and in the field. On the other hand, the meeting we had with Dr. Andrea Coronato was very fruitful to learn about the mechanisms and advantages of actively participating in the IAG. The three Chileans that participated were very enthusiastic about promoting and organizing the young geomorphologists of our country and thus develop more intensively the discipline.

Finally, I would like to thank the economic help the IAG gave me to participate in the GEOCUAR congress, since without it y couldn´t travel. I hope to keep in touch and to forge new South American relations.

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG) offers 2 grants of 300 (three-hundred) Euros to PhD STUDENTS in GEOMORHOLOGY from EUROPE (except UK) who are willing to take part in the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 3-6 December 2018). PhD students in the first year of their PhD programme will be given priority, but those in their 2nd year can also apply. The Workshop is organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and recognised by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG). The course will provide PhD students with elements of training for research and with an opportunity to meet others at an early stage of their training when they were wrestling with the problems of research design etc.
