Louis SCUDERI is Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Director of the Center for Rapid Environmental Assessment and Terrain Evaluation (CREATE) at the University of New Mexico, USA. His current subjects of research are dendrogeomorphic measurement of erosion rates in mountain environments, late-Holocene glacial geomorphology, alluvial fans and Distributary Fluvial Systems (DFS) in sedimentary basins and the creation of global-scale databases in the physical sciences. The Sierra Nevada Mountains in the western United States and China’s northern deserts are his main research areas, but he is also involved in ongoing projects in Australia (Victorian Alps) and South America (Ecuador, Paraguay, Brazil). He was appointed to a Professorship for Senior International Scientists at the Institute for Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China in 2011.

His recent publications include chapter contributions to SEPM’s ‘Special Publication on Paleosols’ (SEPM, 2013), ‘From Rivers to Rock Record’ (SEPM, 2011) and ‘The Physical Geography of North America’ (Oxford, 2001), guest editing a special issue of Quaternary Research ‘Inner Mongolia’ in 2010, and include more than 50 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature, Geomorphology, Geology, Catena, PNAS, Sedimentary Geology and Quaternary Research. Currently, he is working on the development of Global Desert and Dune (GD3) and Global Tree Line  (GTLD) databases for geomorphological research and environmental assessment and monitoring.
