International Colloquium "OL'MAN RIVER" - GEO-ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASPECTS of RIVERS and RIVER PLAINS - Ghent, Belgium, 22-24 September 2006

The first two days of the colloquium speakers of different countries will present (in English and French) interdisciplinary case studies from a wide time-frame. The geographical context is not limited but focus will be on the Mediterranean area. Simultaneously an important poster session will be organised. On the optional third day, a geo-archaeological excursion in Flanders is programmed.

The IAG/AIG Working Group on Geoarchaeology was formed at the 1997 International Conference of Geomorphology in Bologna. Morgan de Dapper, who created the group, chaired it together with Jose Luis Pena-Monne and John Boardman as vice-chairmen. Two conferences have been organised by the Working Group: "Geoarchaeology of the Landscapes of Classical Antiquity" by Morgan de Dapper in Ghent (Belgium) (23-25 October 1998) in cooperation with the European Commission for Education (COST Action G2). 120 researchers attended the conference, of which the proceedings were published in 2001. The second conference entitled "Geoarchaeology in Northwestern Europe" was organised by vie-chairman John Boardman and Martin Bell in Reading (UK) (15-17 December 1999) in collaboration with the British Geomorphological Research Group, with 150 participants. This first four-year term allowed to set up a network of researchers and confirmed the vitality of geoarchaeology and the importance of geomorphology.

In Tokyo the Working Group was renewed for another four years. Eric Fouache (University of Paris IV-Sorbonne, France) was appointed chairman of the Group with Morgan de Dapper (Ghent, Belgium) and Zhongyuan Chen (Eastern China University, Shangai) as vice-chairmen.

For this new term, the Working Group aims at adjoining to geomorphology researchers in the fields of quaternary research, archaeology, and history, eager to work in favour of an open-minded, pluridisciplinary geoarchaeology, from the reconstitution of paleoenvironments to historical geography. The group will encourage regional syntheses in geoarchaeological studies. Four conferences have been planned so far:
  • 24-26 April 2002: International Conference "Environmental Dynamics and History in the Mediterranean areas" (Paris, University of Paris IV-Sorbonne, France).
  • October 2003: Workshop in Athens (Harokopio University, Athens, Greece)
Contact : Professor Kosmas Pavlopoulos (e-mail)
  • 2004: Field Training Session (In preparation)
  • 2005: Geoarchaeology Workshop at the 6th International Conference of Geomorphology in Saragossa (Spain)
