IAG Memorandum of Understanding with Geomorphica

Memorandum of Understanding between
GEOMORPHICA and the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GEOMORPHOLOGISTS
2023-2025

On July 12, 2022, IAG communicated to Geomorphica that their board had approved the use of IAG funds to support Geomorphica. This document summarizes the basic terms of the collaboration agreement between both parties and what each one contributes.

The boards of IAG and Geomorphica are separate entities and will run their respective groups supporting each other but without interfering with each other. IAG and Geomorphica members who contribute to other journals in geomorphology can continue to do so. Geomorphica is designed as an alternative to provide free publishing and reading opportunities to all, particularly for colleagues in historically under-represented institutions and communities.

The IAG agrees to provide financial support of up to 700EUR per year until 2025 to help Geomorphica cover its running costs. This agreement will be reviewed and a new decision on financial support for this journal will be taken by the IAG Executive committee in 2025.

The IAG agrees that Geomorphica can use their network of contacts throughout the world to help Geomorphica reach historically under-represented communities in the field of Geomorphology. The IAG agrees that Geomorphica can be promoted in their events through the allocation of presentation time, short videos, or leaflet distribution, without incurring expenses beyond those associated with the budget agreed for the year.

The IAG assigns Takashi Oguchi and Susan Conway as formal contacts within the IAG Executive Committee to interact with Geomorphica and keep communication avenues open. These contacts agree to participate in at least one annual meeting with Geomorphica to realise the terms of this agreement and to discuss topics of common interest.

In turn Geomorphica will provide to the IAG:

  • An annual report including journal expenses, journal status, and journal statistics. When appropriate, the report will include updates on editorial board membership and steering committee
  • A potential outlet for IAG’s conferences and other events in the form of proceedings/special issues, led by invited associate editors named in agreement with IAG to lead those
  • Recognition of IAG’s support on Geomorphica’s communication channels (e.g. IAG logo on conference presentations and on Geomorphica’s website).
  • An invitation to IAG to name a representative to form part of the external advisory commission that will help Geomorphica best serve the geomorphology
  • One or more formal contacts within the Geomorphica Steering Committee to interact more closely with the IAG Executive and keep communication avenues
  • Participation in, at least one annual meeting with the IAG Executive Committee to revise/update the terms of this agreement and optionally in any additional meetings required to discuss topics of common interest.
