CALL for GRANTS for the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 4-7 December 2023)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers 3 grants of 300 (three-hundred) Euros to PhD STUDENTS in GEOMORHOLOGY from EUROPE (except UK) who are willing to take part in the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 4–7 December 2023). The Windsor workshop is only for PhD students who started in 2023. The Workshop is organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and recognised by the IAG.

The course will provide PhD students with elements of training for research and with an opportunity to meet others at an early stage of their training when they are facing the problems of research design etc. The content is non-technical, but provides training in project management, group work, dealing with large data sets, fieldwork, lab and numerical modelling, gaining funding as well as publication and future career development. Students will also meet a wide variety of academics and facilitators who are practicing researchers as well as the BSG postgrad representatives on the Executive.

The workshop has been running at the Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over 30 years – many notable researchers and academics attended and benefited from this course.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – 14th SINAGEO (Corumbá, Brazil, 24-30 August 2023)

The 14th National Symposium of Geomorphology (SINAGEO) in Brazil occurred in Corumbá on August 24th to 30th. To help Young Geomorphologists from Latin America to attend this event, the IAG offered 2 travel grants of 400€ each. The Grant Holders were Paulo Fachin and Mara Mantegazza – congratulation to them! Grant Holders highlight a “friendly and welcoming event“, and an global “excellent experience” that was “highly enlightening”. They both appreciated the diversity of activities: classical scientific sessions, but also short courses, workshops, and fieldwork. They also both managed to present their PhD research, and to “make work contacts”. That represented a “gratifying experience”, as they were able to get feedback from experienced researchers working on close topics.

Overall, Mara keeps memory of a “challenging and enriching experience“, as well as a “rewarding social gathering”. Paulo concludes his report by wishing that other Young Geomorphologists from Latin American countries will be able to attend future events with the help of the IAG.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) Workshop at the 6th EUCOP 2023 (Puigcerdà, Spain, 18–22 June)

The Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) organised a workshop during the 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP 2023). To help Young Geomorphologists to attend this event, the IAG offered two grants of 350€ each to Juditha Aga (Oslo, Norway) and Maike Offer (Munich, Germany). Find their full reports here:

The grant holders highlight a “wonderful experience”, which was “exhilarating” after the period of online meetings due to the global pandemic. Juditha, who was involved in the organisation of the workshop, also specifies that she “learned a lot” as part of the organising committee.

The workshop itself speakers gave “inspiring talks”, both on scientific topics and soft skills related to permafrost research. Following discussions with experienced researchers were especially “interesting and helpful”. Maike especially reports the talk of Adam Kirkwood on preparing presentations and designing slides as “immensely beneficial” for his future career. Both grant holders also keep good memories of the “networking activities” and “informal events” organised as part of the workshop. Overall, the workshop represented a “supportive environment that encouraged collaboration and exchange of ideas”.

Report by IAG Grant Holder – European Meeting of Young Geomorphologists (Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, 9-11 June 2023)

The European Meeting of Young Geomorphologists took place in Chamonix (France) on 9-11 June 2023. To help Young Geomorphologists to attend that event, the IAG offered a grant of 300€ to Aleksandra Osika (Katowice, Poland). Find her full report here.

The Meeting started with a day of conferences divided in three thematic sessions: ‘Dynamic of glacial and periglacial environments’, ‘Geoheritage and geodiversity’, and ‘Methodological advances to innovative case studies’. Aleksandra reports that the ‘inspiring presentations’ led to ‘vibrant and friendly discussions’ all along the Meeting, and she is particularly glad of the ‘positive feedback’ she had on her own presentation.

The next two days of the Meeting were dedicated to field trips in the Mont Blanc Massif, that Aleksandra reports as ‘well organised’. They notably visited the Mer de Glace, an actively retreating glacier, which led to discussions on the ‘perception of the consequences of the ongoing climate change’, especially from the point of view of tourism. They also visit the Ferret Valley, which enabled discussions on the ‘dynamics of rock glaciers and slope processes’ in the area. Overall, Aleksandra describes these field trips as an ‘unforgettable experience’.

For Aleksandra, the Meeting as a whole was ‘scientifically and socially fruitful’, as it allowed her to gain additional knowledge on glacial and periglacial geomorphology, and to establish new scientific contacts.

CALL for GRANTS for the 14th SINAGEO National Symposium of Geomorphology – Corumbá, Brazil (24-30 August 2023)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) announces the offering of 2 travel grants of 400 € (four hundred Euros) to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* from Latin America countries (including Brazil) in the 14th SINAGEO, the National Symposium of Geomorphology in Brazil (Corumbá, 24-30 August 2023).

The 14th SINAGEO is organized by the União da Geomorfologia Brasileira (Brazilian Geomorphological Union) along with the University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS). The focus of that edition is “Geomorphology of Wetlands in the Context of Environmental Changes”, with highlights given to the Pantanal (the largest wetland in the world) and its interactions with current environmental changes. The theme reflects the concerns about the connections between geomorphology and environmental problems, not only in Pantanal, but in the surrounding mountain areas that contribute for a better understanding of environmental changes in this biome. The program includes key-lectures by Brazilian and foreign speakers, short-courses, field trips, workshops, special sessions, and oral and poster presentations. Except for foreign guest appearances, the event will be held in Portuguese.

The two Young Geomorphologists will be granted free admission to the conference, along with access to various activities including a short course of their choice from the event’ list, a one-day field trip to Urucum Massif, and the social dinner. Moreover, they will be able to attend Delta-H, which is a one-day post-conference focused on Quantitative Geomorphology and Landscape Evolution (https://www.deltahbrasil.com). CALL for GRANTS for the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology 2023 in Cappadocia, Türkiye (12-14 September 2023)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers a number of grants to support the participation of Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in Türkiye) who are willing to take part in the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology in Cappadocia, Türkiye (12–14 September 2023) and related Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists. Priority will be given to applicants who intend to participate in the Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists organized just after the conference.

The Regional Conference on Geomorphology will be hosted by the Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi located in the heart of Cappadocia, Türkiye. It is organized by the IAG and the Turkish Society for Geomorphology. It is open to all scientists and practitioners. It will include scientific sessions, keynote lectures as well as an Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists “High Resolution Mapping and Cosmogenic Dating of Fluvial Landforms”. Field trips will be arranged in various parts of Türkiye before, during and after the Conference.

The IAG is willing to help Young Geomorphologists to attend the Conference by providing a financial support. The amount of the grants will depend on the applicant’s place of residence and estimated financial need. Most grants are offered to Young Geomorphologists from less-favoured countries worldwide**.

Applicants should have a special interest and research experience in the themes of the Conference, to be proved by their CV.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – 3rd IAG-DENUCHANGE Working Group Workshop 2023 (Haifa, Israel, 13-16 March)

The 3rd IAG-DENUCHANGE WG Workshop took place in Haifa (Israel) on 13-16 March 2023. To help Young Geomorphologists to attend that event, the IAG offered two grants of 450€ each to Eliza Płaczkowska and Axel Cerón González (both from Kraków, Poland). Find their full reports here:

The workshop started by conferences and presentations. Both grant holders report a “friendly atmosphere“, as well as active and fruitful scientific discussions. They also very much appreciated that two complete scientific sessions were dedicated to Young Geomorphologists. Overall, this event was a “great opportunity” to present and discuss their results.
The post-conference, three-day field trip represented also an “impressive” experience. They learned about how to use archaeological remains in the study of denudation rates, and hence had the opportunity to visit Byzantine ruins, caves or tombs, as well as the Dead Sea. They also assisted, due to the rainy conditions, to a flash flood in the desert – which Eliza reports as “one of the most exciting experiences in [her] life”.

3rd Intensive Training Program of the Indian Young Geomorphologists Forum – 2-5 March 2023

The Indian Young Geomorphologists Forum organises its 3rd Intensive Training Programme for Young Geomorphologists on 2-5 March 2023, under the auspices of the IAG. The event will be held in Computer Aided Design Centre, Jadavpur University (Kolkata) and focused on the theme ‘Application of UAV (drone) in Geomorphological Studies and Environmental Monitoring‘.

The four-days intensive training course will provide Young Geomorphologists with an overview on UAV technologies, image processing and mapping, and a field trip (5 March) in the coastal environment of the Indian Sundarban – with UAV-based applications. Applicants are expected to have a clear understanding of geomorphology and interest in the research domain, along with basic knowledge in statistics, field instruments and RS-GIS.

Register via that online form, before 20 February, for 2,700 rupees (~ 30€). The first 40 applicants that fulfil the requirements will be accommodated. Registration fees include working lunch, workshop kit and field trip but not the accommodation.

CALL for GRANTS for the European Meeting of Young Geomorphologists (Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, 9-11 June 2023)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers 2 travel grants of 300 (three-hundred) Euros to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in France, Switzerland and Italy) who are willing to take part in the European Meeting of Young Geomorphologists (Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, 9–11 June 2023). The preference will be given to applicants for countries without young geomorphologists groups. The meeting is organised by the Young Geomorphologists of the Swiss, French and Italian Geomorphological Societies under the auspices of the IAG.
The meeting will gather young researchers interested in geomorphology. The event will focus on regional-scale studies, including the interactions between climate change, human societies and landscape evolution in fluvial, periglacial and glacial environments. The program of the meeting involves: i) a conference, where the participants will present their research, and ii) a two-days excursion in Chamonix Valley and Veny Valley to discover the fluvial and periglacial geomorphology in alpine environments.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – ICG 2022 Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists (17-20 September 2022, Guimarães, Portugal)

The 10th International Conference on Geomorphology took place in Coimbra (Portugal) on 12-16 September 2022. The IAG, the European Geoscience Union (EGU) and the French Geomorphology Group (GFG) offered grants to 19 Young Geomorphologists totaling 22,500€, for them to attend that event, as well as the post-conference intensive course. Find a summary of the grant distribution in the table below.

Concerning the conference, all grant holders emphasized the great organisation, from the conference venue to the catering provided. They also appreciated the opportunity to discover Portugal, and especially the city of Coimbra – either through the guided trip or individually.
All grant holders reported on the high-quality of the oral presentations and posters during the whole week, as well as inspiring keynote lectures. They considered that ICG2022 was a wonderful opportunity for them to present their recent research projects, but also to learn about the novelties in each of their fields of research. The event was especially fruitful in helping to strengthen their network and build new collaborations.

The post-conference intensive course definitely left grant holders with awesome memories. Activities were diverse (lectures, practical courses, field trips) and organised in a professional environment that made this course very productive for everyone. Besides the professional point of view, they emphasized the outstanding landscapes and the friendly atmosphere among students and organisers.

Overall, the grant holders are thankful to the IAG, the EGU and the GFG for their grants, as for some of them their participation in the conference and intensive course would not have been possible otherwise. They encourage every Young Geomorphologist around the world to apply for such grants, as it opens a wide range of opportunities – both from a professional and personal points of view.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 5-8th December 2022)

Maƚgorzata Szczypińska and Alessia Sorrentino were awarded grants of 300€ each to attend the Post-Graduate Training Workshop organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG), more specifically Dr. Lucy Clark and Prof. John Wainwright. With this grant, they stayed four days in Windsor (UK) at the Cumberland Lodge. Their full reports can be found in PDF here:

They both highlight the great working environment at Cumberland Lodge, which gave off “professionalism combined with a friendly, supportive atmosphere”.  They were also very happy with the content of the lectures: topics were “important” and sometimes “not always discussed”, for instance the presence of predatory journals in the system of research publication. Concerning the socialisation, Alessia judged “crucial” the numerous activities and breaks with the groups, and Maƚgorzata appreciated to “confront [his] research experiences” with other PhD students. Overall, they both report a very good experience, which notably helped them to “feel more comfortable with [their] skills” and gave them “tips and tricks” to help them during the completion of their PhD.

CALL for GRANTS for the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) Workshop, at the 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP) 2023 (Puigcerdà, Spain, 18–22 June)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) announces the offering of 2 travel grants of 350 € (three hundred and fifty Euros) to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in Spain) in the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN) Workshop at the 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP 2023) (Puigcerdà, Spain, 18–22 June 2023).

The aim of the PYRN organisation is to gather young permafrost researchers to network and share ideas on the latest scientific discoveries on permafrost. The meeting will be held at the Museu Cerdà in Puigcerdà, Spain. The Workshop and social event will focus on training and networking specifically young permafrost scientists. The event will involve a whole day of workshops on both technical and soft skills. The program of the Workshop involves: i) half day of talks on permafrost-related scientific topics; ii) half day of talks on soft-skills topics, e.g., writing proposals, pursuing a permafrost career outside academia.

The meeting will take place at the University of Haifa, followed by two days of field trips, including geoarchaeological study sites, long and short-term denudation areas and various research sites along the Dead Sea shores. The Workshop aims to gather various Earth scientists from all around the world to contribute to a better understanding of the Earth surface systems, and to facilitate future collaboration. The program of the Workshop includes a special session dedicated to presentations given by Young Geomorphologists. During the Workshop, the Young Geomorphologists will have the opportunity to meet and engage discussions with scientists from various countries, and visit cutting-edge scientific study sites.

The IAG gave its auspices to the European Young Geomorphologists Meeting, to be held in Chamonix (France) from June 9th to 11th! This event is organised by the Young Geomorphologists of the Swiss Geomorphological Society, the Italian Association of Physical Geography and Geomorphology, and the French Geomorphology Group. Its purpose is to gather the community of european young geomorphologists for them to present their work and discuss novel research in geomorphology.

The first day will be dedicated to oral presentations, and the two next days to field trips in the Chamonix and Veny Valleys. CALL for GRANTS for BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop 2022 (Windsor, UK, 5-8 December 2022)

The International Association of Geomorphologists offers 2 grants of 300 (three-hundred) Euros to PhD STUDENTS in GEOMORHOLOGY from EUROPE (except UK) who are willing to take part in the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 5–8 December 2022). The Windsor workshop is only for PhD students who started in 2022. The Workshop is organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and recognised by the IAG.

The course will provide PhD students with elements of training for research and with an opportunity to meet others at an early stage of their training when they are facing the problems of research design etc. The content is non-technical, but provides training in project management, group work, dealing with large data sets, fieldwork, lab and numerical modelling, gaining funding as well as publication and future career development. Students will also meet a wide variety of academics and facilitators who are practicing researchers as well as the BSG postgrad representatives on the Executive.

The workshop has been running at the fantastic Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over 30 years – many notable researchers and academics attended and benefited from this course.

IAG Grants for the 10th International Conference on Geomorphology (Coimbra, Portugal), 12-16 September 2022

The 10th International Conference on Geomorphology (ICG 2022) is organised on 12-16 September by the IAG, the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists (APGeom), co-organised by the Centre of Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT), the Department of Geography and Tourism (University of Coimbra) and the Department of Earth Sciences (University of Coimbra), and co-sponsored by the European Geoscience Union (EGU) – find details here.

The IAG, the EGU and the French Geomorphology Group (GFG) offer respectively 15,000€, 6,000€ and 1,500€ as grants for Young Geomorphologists to attend this event in person. Note that:

  • priority will be given to Young Geomorphologists from less-favoured countries worldwide, and to applicants who intend to participate in the Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists;
  • applications from candidates who already received one or more IAG grants totaling 500€ or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible;
  • in recognition of the outstanding research carried out by the French geomorphologist Jean Tricart (1920-2003) in Latin America, Africa and Asia, one of the grant holders from these regions will be designated as the Tricart Scholar.

2nd Circular of the Youth Symposium “Geomorphology in Quaternary Research”, 28th June – 1st July 2022 (Borucino, Poland)

The date approaches for the Youth Symposium “Geomorphology in Quaternary Research” – the first symposium of the INQUA Peribaltic Working Group (PWG), co-organised by the Polish Association of Geomorphologists and supported by the IAG! From 28th June to 1st July, this event intended for Early Career Researchers includes oral presentations, field trips, workshops but also friendly social events. Find the second circular here.

16th International Young Geomorphologists’ Meeting of the German Young Geomorphologists (24-26th June 2022)

The German Young Geomorphologists are organising the 16th International Young Geomorphologists’ Meeting, on 24th to 26th of June 2022! This event will be held in person, in Bad Kreuznach (Germany).

The meeting will be an opportunity for young researchers in Geomorphology (and related fields) to present their work of BSc, MSc and PhD during oral or poster sessions. The meeting will provide a forum to promote fruitful discussions with other young scientists, to solve any issue you are encountering, or simply to have feedback on your work!

In addition, a field trip will be held to learn about the geomorphological context of the surroundings of Bad Kreuznach. Keynote lectures will also be given by Prof. Dr. Wilfried Haeberli and PD Dr. Tobias Ullmann, on various topics in geomorphology. You can also register to attend the workshop on “Digital Terrain Methods” that will take place after the meeting, on 27th June.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 6-9th December 2021)

Marin Mićunović and Marta Zocchi were awarded grants of 300€ each to attend the Post-Graduate Training Workshop organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG). With this grant, they stayed four days in Windsor (UK) at the Cumberland Lodge. Their full reports can be found in PDF here:

Overall, they had a very good time at the workshop. Marin’s report highlights the diversity of activities: lectures, group meeting, practical work in programming/modelling, discussions about writing & publishing papers… He also enjoyed the numerous “coffee/tea breaks or meeting in the lodge bar”, that allowed to “make new contacts, build friendships, and share ideas and plans”. Marin and Marta both emphasized the organisation, as well as the atmosphere which was “friendly”, with a “warm welcome”. Marta ends her report saying that she “highly recommend(s) this splendid experience”.

Report on the IGI YGF 2nd Intensive Training Program for the Young Geomorphologists

The Young Geomorphologists Forum (YGF) of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) organised its 2nd Intensive Training Program for Young Geomorphologists. The conveners were Dr. Sayantan DAS (Department of Geography, Dum Dum Motijheel College, India) and Dr. Suvendu ROY (Department of Geography, KGTM, India).

This event was held online on 1-2 November 2021, with 8 courses divided into 4 technical sessions covering various topics like Paleoclimate, Geochronology or Natural Hazards.

Reports by Grant Holders – IAG Grants for RCG in Athens (19-21 September 2019)

Eight Young Geomorphologists were awarded grants by the IAG to attend the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology (from 19 to 21 September 2019), as well as the 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course (from 22 to 27 September). Both were about “Geomorphology of Climatically and Tectonically sensitive areas”, and took place in Athens (Greece). Find five reports here:

As highlights on the Conference, Sayantan emphasises the organisation: “The program scheduling was efficiently handled by Prof. Niki Evelpidou and her team from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. A special acknowledgement is due for the group of students and scholars of the university, who worked relentlessly to make this event a success.” Sujay found that the four keynotes lectures “were without exception outstanding in content and presentation and was a real highlight of the conference”, a feeling shared by Pedro.

Overall, all Grant Holders praise the great organisation and content of the Intensive Course. Bachtiar highlights that this Course held “in a friendly environment” and allowed them to practise “lots of activities”. Shreya even states: “that training programme was the best training programme I had ever attended”.

CALL for GRANTS for the Mid-European Geomorphology Meeting 2021

The IAG announces the offering of 2 grants of 300€ to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in Germany, Austria and Switzerland), among those who applied to attend in person the Mid-European Geomorphology Meeting 2021 (Munich, Germany, 6-9 November 2021). The meeting will propose regular scientific sessions (6/7 November), with presentations focused on Geomorphology in a changing climate, but also on recent progress in various methods and techniques applied to geomorphology, such as dating, geophysical investigations, modelling, remote sensing… Other sessions will be audience-driven discussions on a broad range of subjects around geomorphology. The scientific sessions period will be followed by a Post-Conference Field Trip (8/9 November), focused on Pleniglacial and Lateglacial geomorphology, around many study sites (Ammersee, Karst Wetterstein Mountains, Zugspitze…).  For more information on the conference, including its program, click here.

Reports by Grant Holders – 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration

The International Association of Geomorphologists funded the participation of two young Planetary Geomorphologists in the 7th International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration held in Ushuaia, Argentina, 13-17 January 2020. The Conference was the latest in a continuing series of conferences intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas regarding the polar regions of Mars. The focus was also on terrestrial analogs that enhance the interpretation of remote sensing data from Mars, and on concepts for future missions. The IAG allocated 2 grants of 500€ that were awarded to the following candidates:

Report on 1st Intensive Training Programme for the Young Geomorphologists of India

The Young Geomorphologists Forum (YGF) was established under the banner of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists in November 2019. The IGI‒YGF organized a 4 day long Intensive Training Programme for The Young Geomorphologists of India from 2nd to 5th March 2020 in the Department of Geography, University of Calcutta, Kolkata–700019, India. Dr. Shreya Bandyopadhyay (President, IGI-YGF and Assistant Professor, Maharaja Nandakumar Mahavidyalaya, Vidyasagar University) and Dr. Sayantan Das (Vice-President, IGI-YGF and Assistant Professor, Dum Dum Motijheel College, West Bengal State University) were the event conveners. The event marked the newly launched ‘International Geomorphology Week’ for 2020.

The following are the highlights from the programme:
– 7 lectures
– 2 laboratory-based hands on exercises
– 1 field-based hands on exercise
– A day-long Field visit to the coastal areas of West Bengal, India

In all, 70 young geomorphologists from different parts of India attended this event. The participants came from nine states of India and a total of 24 universities and organisations were represented. Please see here for a full report.
