Call for Grants for the 5th DENUCHANGE IAG Working Group Workshop (Naxos Island, Greece, 6–9 October 2026)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) announces the offering of 1 travel grant of 450 € (four hundred and fifty Euros) to support the participation of one Young Geomorphologist* (excluding Greece) in the 5th IAG DENUCHANGE Workshop in Greece (Naxos Island, 6-9 October 2026) organized by the IAG Working Group on Denudation and Environmental Changes in Different Morphoclimatic Zones (DENUCHANGE).

The workshop aims to bring together geoscientists, to contribute to an advanced understanding of denudation processes, such as weathering, erosion and mass movements in both coastal and terrestrial environments, their drivers, rates, diversity and variability around the world, and to facilitate future collaborations.

The first two days are dedicated to oral & poster presentations, followed by two days of field trips exploring natural hazards, weathering processes, and coastal dynamics from inland Naxos to its coastline. A training session will be organized if there are at least seven young geomorphologists among the participants. Otherwise, the young geomorphologists will be integrated into the workshop activities, including oral presentations and the field trip.

During the workshop, the IAG Working Group “Virtual Field Trips in Geomorphology” will offer hands-on laboratories focused on Virtual Field Trips (VFTs). These interactive sessions will provide participants with practical experience in the design and application of VFTs for geomorphological research and education. Participants will also have the opportunity to use VR headsets to explore immersive examples of VFTs firsthand. The labs aim to foster active collaboration between members of the two Working Groups and are particularly highly recommended for early-career geomorphologists, offering opportunities for skill enhancement and the exchange of innovative ideas.

Applications from candidates who already achieved one or more IAG grants totaling 500 euros or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible.

  • Short CV (maximum 2 pages long), including up to 10 papers related to the Workshop themes ;
  • Certificate of the highest degree achieved (with the date of achievement) ;
  • Abstract submitted or to be submitted to the Workshop.

  1. Scientific content based on the abstract (relevance to the workshop, scientific value, clarity in terms of English and structure).
  2. Academic activities based on the CV (dissemination of scientific results, e.g., publications, conferences, additional community activities such as event organisation, editorial activities, outreach, etc.).

Call for Grants for the II European Young Geomorphologists Meeting (Italy/Slovenia/Croatia, 25-27 June 2026)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) announces the offering of 1 travel grant of 400 euros (four hundred Euros) to support the participation of one Young Geomorphologist (except from Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia) in the II European Young Geomorphologists Meeting (II EYGM) (Italy, Croatia, 25–27 June 2026).

The event is organised by the Italian Young Geomorphologists’ Coordinators of AIGeo, the Young Geomorphologists of Croatia (YGC), and the Geomorphological Society of Slovenia. Its aim is to strengthen relations with geomorphological associations in neighbouring countries and, more broadly, to promote cooperation among young geomorphologists from Europe and beyond. It seeks to foster scientific exchange, the sharing of research experiences, and the creation of an international network of early-career researchers in geomorphology.

The event begins with a day dedicated to participant introductions, research presentations, and an excursion around Ogulin (Croatia), concluding with an evening session on the geological and geomorphological setting of the region. The second day focuses on visits to key karst and canyon sites across Croatia and Slovenia before the group settles in Trieste (Italy). The final day is devoted to exploring the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve in Italy, with field activities taking place throughout the day before returning to Trieste. The IAG grant holder will be granted free admission to the event.

5th IAG DENUCHANGE Working Group Workshop (Naxos, Greece, 6-9 October 2026)

The IAG DENUCHANGE Working Group is pleased to announce the 5th IAG DENUCHANGE Workshop, which will be held in Naxos, Greece, on 6–9 October 2026. This workshop aims to provide a platform for the international geoscience community to discuss advances in the study of denudation processes, including weathering, erosion, and mass movements, in both terrestrial and coastal environments. Participants will explore the drivers, rates, diversity, and variability of these processes worldwide, while fostering collaborative research opportunities.

The study of denudation processes has long been a cornerstone of geomorphology, encompassing research from small-scale soil and rock weathering to large-scale landscape evolution. Over recent decades, increasing attention has been given to the complex interactions between natural processes and human activities that shape inland and coastal environments. Advances in this field have been driven by interdisciplinary approaches combining geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, and environmental management. Nevertheless, there remains a pressing need for integrated studies linking catchment dynamics with coastal evolution, as well as for practical solutions addressing land degradation, erosion, and climate-related hazards.

In this context, the IAG DENUCHANGE Workshop in Naxos offers a timely opportunity to review recent advances, discuss emerging challenges, and explore future directions in denudation research.

The workshop will include two days of oral presentations and poster sessions, followed by a two-day post-workshop field trip across Naxos Island. The field excursion will emphasize the continuum between catchment dynamics and coastal processes, focusing on land degradation, flash flood hazards, cliff retreat, dune erosion, and the implementation of Nature-based Solutions for climate adaptation.

In addition, and in collaboration with the IAG Working Group on Virtual Field Trips in Geomorphology, the workshop will host hands-on Virtual Field Trip laboratories during the first two days of the meeting. These interactive sessions will provide participants with practical experience in developing and applying Virtual Field Trips in geomorphological research and education. The labs are expected to foster active interaction and exchange between members of the two Working Groups and to be particularly attractive to early-career and young geomorphologists, enhancing skills development and cross-fertilization of ideas.

20th East Eurasia International Workshop (11-17 October 2026, Chengdu, China)

The IAG is happy to give auspices 20th East Eurasia International Workshop (EEIW), organised by the Faculty of Geoscience and Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University (FGE SWJTU) and the International Organizing Committee of EEIW.

The workshop will be held on 11-17 October 2026 in Chengdu (China), and will be focused on the theme: “Present Earth Surface Processes and Long-term Environmental Changes in East Eurasia”. Main themes will be as varied as surface processes, lake catchment, paleolimnology, geohazards, climate changes… and many others!

As this year is the Twentieth Jubilee Meeting of the EEIW, the organizers are preparing a truly memorable meeting – honouring two decades of partnership and discovery. Its program will include the publication of extended abstracts, a proposed special issue in the Quaternary International Journal, an inspiring three-day field excursion, and the EEIW Students’ Works Award.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 1-4 December 2025)

The IAG awarded three grants of 300€ each to help three Young Geomorphologists to attend the Post-Graduate Training Workshop organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG). Congratulations to Edgar Figueira, Barbora Koláčková and Aleksandar Pilipović!
Grant Holders describe a “highly rewarding training event” that had a “warm and supportive atmosphere”. The workshop provided diverse types of training: networking, public speaking, concise presentation of research, project planning and time management, research ethics, practical sessions (programming with R and Python)… As for every year, Grant Holders also especially appreciated to have the opportunity to meet other PhD students, as well as the “beautiful scenery” of the Windsor Park and Lodge.

Prashar Lake Landslide – geomorphic evidence of slope instability

The Prashar Lake landslide, located in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India, is a notable example of large-scale slope failure in the Lesser Himalaya. Captured in this drone image from ~1000 meters distance (drone capability), at elevation 8363 ft, the landslide reveals classic features of a translational movement, including a prominent crown, main scarp, and multiple displaced blocks along stepped shear surfaces. The area is composed primarily of weathered metasedimentary rocks and colluvial debris, which, under the influence of monsoonal rainfall, undergo frequent instability. The geometry and structure of the slide suggest deep-seated deformation, with differential displacement visible across the slope. This landslide highlights the geomorphic consequences of active tectonics, steep terrain, and intense weathering in the Himalayan landscape. It serves as a compelling example of ongoing mass wasting processes and the necessity for continuous monitoring in such high-risk zones.

IAG Webinar for the International Geodiversity Day 2025

Established in 2021 by the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference, the International Geodiversity Day occurs each October 6th and aims to raise public and policy awareness of the importance of non-living nature.

To celebrate the fourth edition of the International Geodiversity Day, the IAG organises a webinar on the theme “Geodiversity related to Geoparks and National Parks”. The webinar will be held on November 13th, 8:00-10:00 UTC, and brings together three speakers from Taiwan, India, and France.

Webinar “Geomorphology of Southeast Asia” organised by the University Malaysia Terengganu (2 November 2025)

The IAG National Scientific Member for Malaysia, the Marine Geoscience Program (Faculty of Science and Marine Environment, University Malaysia Terengganu) organises its second webinar on the theme “Geomorphology of Southeast Asia“. The IAG is happy to give its auspices for this event!

The webinar will take place on November 2nd 2025 at 3:00-5:00 PM (Malaysia time, GMT +8). You will hear five speakers on subjects as diverse as river and delta sedimentology, river morphology, geoparks, or sea-level changes – along with a keynote lecture of Prof. Ian Douglas: “From Drainage Density to Disaster Risk Reduction: 60 Years of Malaysian Geomorphology”.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – RCG 2025 and Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists (Timișoara, Romania, 16-18 September 2025)

The Regional Conference on Geomorphology 2025 took place in Timișoara (Romania) on 16-18 September 2025. The conference was preceded by the 4th IAG-EGU Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists, with the theme “Geomorphic services for environmental change understanding: from field surveying to dynamic and systemic risks evaluation”.
The IAG offered grants to 10 Young Geomorphologists to help them attending the conference and the Intensive Course. Congratulations to them!

During the Intensive Course, Grant Holders were trained in a wide range of techniques: field mapping of geomorphological features, UAV-based and LiDAR remote sensing, geophysical surveys, and sampling for dendrogeomorphology. They describe “extremely enriching experiences“, an “exceptionnel” Intensive Course, and an “outstanding organising team“. The conference also “fully met [their] expectations“: it allowed Grant Holders to share their research, as posters or orals, but also to meet leading international experts and to build connections with other Young Geomorphologists. Overall, Grant Holders express their deep thanks to the organising team, and to the IAG for allowing them to participate in such a great event.

CALL for GRANTS for the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 1-4 December 2025)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers 3 grants of 300 € (three hundred) Euros to PhD students in Geomorphology from Europe (except the UK) who are willing to take part in the BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 1–4 December 2025). The Windsor workshop is only for PhD students who started in 2025. The Workshop is organized by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and recognized by the IAG.

The course will provide PhD students with elements of training for research and with an opportunity to meet others at an early stage of their training when they are facing the problems of research design etc. The content is non-technical, but provides training in project management, group work, dealing with large data sets, fieldwork, lab and numerical modelling, gaining funding as well as publication and future career development. Students will also meet a wide variety of academics and facilitators who are practicing researchers as well as the BSG postgrad representatives on the Executive.

The workshop has been running at the Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over 30 years – many notable researchers and academics attended and benefited from this course.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – Southern African Association of Geomorphologists Conference (Oudtshoorn, South Africa, 15-18 July 2025)

The Southern African Association of Geomorphologists (SAAG) organised its Biennal Conference at the Klleinpaas Resort in Oudtshoorn (South Africa), on 15-18 July 2025. The IAG offered two Grants of 300€ each to help two Young Geomorphologists to attend this event. Congratulations to the two Grant Holders!

On the first day of the conference, Grant Holders were given the opportunity to participate in an “immersive” field trip in and around Oudtshoorn, in the Swartberg Mountains. Described as an “ideal setting” by Grant Holders, this moment “facilitated valuable exchanges” and in-depth discussions with their peers. The next two days were dedicated to oral presentations spread across 6 scientific sessions, and plenary talks. Both Grant Holders had the opportunity to present their work, and received “insightful feedback” on the content and methodology of their work, but also got advice on presentation skills. They both report that the scientific sessions were also an “excellent opportunity to network“. On the last day of the conference, participants also followed a workshop on building effective engagement strategies between local communities, policymakers and industries – in the scope of environmental development projects.

Auspices for the International Workshop DINGLAC_PALANTARICE 2025

The IAG is happy to give its auspices for the International Workshop DINGLAC_PALANTARICE 2025! The event will be held on September 15 and 16, 2025, at the Centro Cultural de España in Montevideo (Uruguay) – an iconic space that will host this international meeting on glaciers, emerging technologies, and polar science.

The event will bring together researchers from Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and other Ibero-American countries, and is structured into eight scientific sessions focusing on the applications of drones, GNSS, spectral sensors, satellite imagery, glacier mass balance, and pollution in polar regions, in addition to a final round table discussion on the future of polar science.

Participants will have the honor of beginning the workshop with a keynote lecture by Dr. Francisco Navarro Valero (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), along with presentations by leading experts from the Military Geographic Institute of Uruguay, University of Oviedo, INTA-CSIC, Seresco, CURE Uruguay, and other institutions.
Afternoon poster sessions will be held on both days, open to early-career researchers as well as established professionals.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – 8th Geomorphometry Conference (Perugia, Italy – 9–13 June 2025)

The 8th Geomorphometry Conference was held on 9-13 June 2025 in Perugia (Italy). This event was hosted by the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection of the Italian National Research Council (CNR IRPI) and the Department of Physics and Geology of the University of Perugia, and organised under the auspices of the International Society for Geomorphometry (ISG).
The IAG offered one Grant of 400€ to help one Young Geomorphologist to attend the conference. Congratulations to the Grant Holder!

During this event, the Grant Holder had the opportunity to “showcase [his] work to a large audience“, in the “openness and collaborative spirit” that characterised this conference. He also particularly highlights the conference field trip to Civita di Bagnoregio, which “offered first-hand insights into how landslides, seismic activity, and surface erosion” shape the landscapes in the area. Overall, the Grant Holder speaks about an extremely positive experience, and specifies that he is “already looking forward” to the Geomorphometry 2027 conference!

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – IAG Working Group Urban Geomorphology 1st Workshop (Kraków, Poland – 12-15 May 2025)

The IAG Urban Geomorphology Working Group organised its 1st Workshop at the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków (Poland) on 12-15 May 2025. The IAG offered two Grants of 300€ each to help two Young Geomorphologists to attend this event. Congratulations to the two Grant Holders!

The general theme of the event was “Geomorphology, geodiversity and geosites in urban areas“. Grant Holders participated in four intense days, filled with plenary sessions, oral scientific sessions, including one dedicated to Young Geomorphologists, poster sessions; but also a workshop intending to present GIS techniques to early-career researchers, a geomorphology trail around Kraków, and a field trip to the Upper Silesia Region!
Grant Holders report an “incredibly enriching” and “invaluable experience“. This event “deepened [their] scientific understanding” of urban geomorphology “from both theoretical and applied perspectives”. They also had the opportunity to present their work, for which they report receiving “positive feedback”, and exchanging ideas. Overall, both Grant Holders highlight that the IAG Grant facilitated their participation in this event!

CALL for IAG GRANTS for The 11th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology, 2–6 February 2026 and ICG2026 Young Geomorphologists Training Program “Methods for assessing geomorphic processes and change” Christchurch, New Zealand 30 January – 7 February 2026

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) offers several grants to support the participation of Young Geomorphologists* worldwide (except those based in New Zealand) who are willing to take part in the 11th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology in Christchurch, New Zealand (2–6 February 2026) and related Young Geomorphologists Training Program (30 January – 7 February 2026). Priority will be given to the YGs who intend to participate in the Young Geomorphologists Training Program. The organizers will waive the registration fee for the 11th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology for all IAG grant holders. One of the IAG grant holders will be eligible to receive the Tricart Scholarship.

The International Conference on Geomorphology will be hosted by the University of Canterbury and is organized by the IAG in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand Geomorphology Group (ANZGG). The Conference welcomes scientists and practitioners from around the world. It will include scientific sessions, keynote lectures, as well as the Young Geomorphologists Training Program, which will provide field and lab-based training in “Methods for assessing geomorphic processes and change” in addition to tailored career preparedness opportunities. Field trips will be organized in various parts of New Zealand and Australia before, during, and after the Conference.

The amount of the grant will depend on the applicant’s country of residence with priority given to Young Geomorphologists from less-favoured countries worldwide** and those who will intend to participate in the Young Geomorphologists Training Program.

Applications from candidates who have already achieved one or more IAG grants totaling 500 euros or more in the past 3 years will not be eligible.

Criteria to be proved by the CV and abstract submitted to the event:

  1. Scientific content based on the abstract (relevance to the conference, scientific value, clarity in terms of English and structure)
  2. Academic activities based on the CV (dissemination of scientific results, e.g., publications, conferences, additional community activities such as event organisation, editorial activities, outreach, etc.)
  3. Intention to participate in the Young Geomorphologists Training Program.

Candidates for the IAG GRANTS are requested to submit the following documents by Monday, 16 June 2025:

  • Short CV (maximum 2 pages long), including no more than 10 papers
  • Certificate of the highest degree achieved (with the date of achievement)

Publication of “River Health Assessment”

The IAG is glad to promote the publication of “River Health Assessment – A Study on Mahananda River, India“, written by Suman Mitra, Lakpa Tamang and Sunil Kumar De, and published by Springer in the Springer Geography series.

The book provides river health assessment techniques, identifies factors affecting river health, and provides measures for river health sustenance. These aspects are detailed through the study of the Mahananda River (India), an important river system which is currently rapidly altered by human activities.

Death Valley National Park in the USA is often described as a land of extremes, known for being the hottest, driest, and lowest national park. While deserts may seem like barren, monotonous landscapes, they are shaped by a variety of physical and anthropogenic factors—Death Valley being no exception. Despite its harsh conditions, the park boasts remarkable biodiversity and geodiversity. Beyond its famous landmarks, such as Badwater Basin, Devil’s Golf Course, and Zabriskie Point, Death Valley also features smaller-scale geomorphic wonders. Among them are ventifacts — rocks sculpted by wind-driven sand into abraded, pitted, etched, grooved, or polished forms. These features typically develop in valley bottoms and open areas where strong winds transport sand and silt over long distances, effectively sandblasting the rock surfaces. If undisturbed, ancient ventifacts serve as valuable paleo-wind indicators, as their grooves and striations align with historical wind directions.

Bank Erosion and River Merging: The Bhagirathi-Babla Confluence Shift, West Bengal, India

The Bhagirathi and Babla Rivers in the Ganga Delta, West Bengal, India, have undergone significant morphological changes due to lateral erosion. Persistent bank erosion — on the right bank of Bhagirathi and the left bank of Babla — led to the eventual merging of their channels. This confluence shift, occurring 4.5 km upstream from the original junction, resulted in the isolation of Nutangram village from the mainland. The process culminated in October 2021, during the late monsoon, when continuous bank failure triggered the final breach. The hydrodynamic forces, coupled with seasonal high flows, facilitated this channel adjustment. Such geomorphological changes highlight the dynamic nature of river systems in the Ganga Delta, emphasizing the role of monsoonal discharge and sediment transport in modifying river courses.

CALL for GRANTS for the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists Conference (Oudtshoorn, South Africa, 15-18 July 2025)

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) announces the offering of 2 travel grants of 300 € (three hundred Euros) to support the participation of two Young Geomorphologists* from African countries (excluding South Africa) in the Biennial Conference of the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists (SAAG). The conference will be held at the Klleinpaas Resort, near Oudtshoorn, located in the Western Cape of South Africa on 15-18 July 2025. A field excursion will take place in and around Oudtshoorn on 15 July and will include dedicated hands-on demonstration for Young Geomorphologists.

The two Young Geomorphologists will be paired with senior researchers to assist in chairing a session. They will also contribute to the final program creation (selection of abstract, division of abstracts into themes, communication with speakers, logistical help on the day). This is specifically aimed at enhancing their conference participation and organizing skills. Additionally, the two successful applicants will be granted a reduction in registration fees.

19th East Eurasia International Workshop (4-8 June 2025, Kinmen, Taiwan)

The IAG is glad to give its auspices to the 19th East Eurasia International Workshop (EEIW), organised by the Department of Geography of the National Taiwan University and the International Organizing Committee of EEIW!

It will be held on 4-8 June 2025 in Kinmen (Taiwan), and the theme is: “Present Earth Surface Processes and Long-term Environmental Changes in East Eurasia“.

The goal of the EEIW Workshop is to present recent research on Earth-surface processes in land and coastal regions and long-term environmental changes, and to promote information and knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and research networking in the East Eurasia and Western Pacific regions.

ProGEO SW Europe Regional Working Group – 2nd Virtual Conference on Geoconservation (27-29 March 2025)

The IAG is happy to give its auspices to the 2nd Virtual Conference on Geoconservation, organised by the ProGEO Southwest Europe Regional Working Group!

It will be held on 27-29 March 2025, with the theme: “Best practices for geoheritage protection and sustainable promotion in SW Europe“.

The program includes two days of scientific sessions, and one day of workshop on the creation of virtual models of geoheritage sites.

The event will be host fully online, and is open to everyone (not only ProGEO members). To register, fill in the form HERE.

9th Badlands Working Group Workshop (online, 23 January 2025)

The IAG Badlands Working Group organises its 9th Workshop on January 23rd 2025 (14:00 – 16:00 CET)!

This Workshop will take the form of an online webinar. Three speakers will present various aspects of badlands research: gullies, badland material, and geophysics on coastal badlands are on the programme! The talks will be followed by the Badlands Working Group Meeting.

Reports by IAG Grant Holders – BSG Post-Graduate Training Workshop (Windsor, UK, 2-5 December 2024)

Ayse Nur Karayel and Magdalena Koschmieder were awarded grants of 300€ each to attend the Post-Graduate Training Workshop organised by the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) – and more specifically by Dr. Lucy Clark and Prof. John Wainwright. This grant allowed them to stay four days at the Cumberland Lodge (Windsor, UK) – find their full reports in pdf here:

Reports describe an overall “enriching experience“, and an “excellent workshop”. Both grant holders received “constructive feedback” on their research projects, which is very valuable at an early stage of a research career. Activities and themes were diverse: oral session, practical workshops on data analysis, discussion on ethics in research, information on academic writing and publishing… Ayse summarises the workshop as follows: “a comprehensive experience that bridged theoretical knowledge with practical application“.  The four-days event was also prone to develop a network between PhD students, in a friendly atmosphere: walks in the Windsor park, pool and tennis table, great meals and social moments were also part of the program!
