Efthimios KARYMBALIS is currently a Full Professor of Coastal and Fluvial Geomorphology at the Department of Geography of the Harokopio University of Athens (Greece). He received a Ph.D. in Geomorphology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1996), and a BSc in Geology from the same University (1992). He was Head of the Department of Geography of the Harokopio University for the period 2017-2020 and Departmental MSc Course Director for the period 2016-2018. Since 2018 he is the President of the Hellenic Committee for Geomorphology and Environment of the Geological Society of Greece. He served as co-chair of the Working Group on Tectonic Geomorphology of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) (2021-2022) and he was the Chief Organizer (Convener) of the 2nd IAG-EGU Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists on “Coastal Geomorphology of Climatically and Tectonically Sensitive Areas” (Gulf of Corinth, Greece) held on the occasion of the “Regional Conference on Geomorphology, Athens 2019”.
He carries out pure and applied research activity primarily focused on coastal geomorphology (with emphases on sea-level changes, palaeogeographic reconstruction of coastal areas), fluvial geomorphology (with emphases on river deltas, fluvial incision, alluvial fans) tectonic geomorphology, geomorphological mapping, and geomorphological hazards (with special attention to climate change induced coastal hazards, tsunamis, flash floods). The results of his research activity have been presented in over 70 national and international conferences and workshops and illustrated in over 160 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has served as a reviewer for several national and international journals and he was the Guest Editor of Special Issues of the Journals “Zeitschrift für Geomorphologie”, “International Journal of Marine Science and Engineering” and “Bulletin of the Geological Society of Greece”.
