Karl W. Wegmann is a professor of geology and geomorphology in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, USA. He obtained his undergraduate degree in geology from Whitman College and a Master’s in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the University of New Mexico. He was employed as a geologist by the Washington State Geologic Survey for approximately five years before enrolling at Lehigh University, where he earned his doctoral degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences in 2008, after which he joined the faculty at NC State University. He is currently the Associate Department Head and a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State University. He conducts research and teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level across the sub-fields of geomorphology, geologic hazards, active tectonics and paleoseismology, geoarchaeology, anthropogenic landscape change, and geospatial analytics. He has co-authored more than 70 research publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, geologic maps, book chapters, and landslide hazard assessments. He was on the management board of the Geological Society of America’s Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division from 2019 to 2023, serving as the Division Chair from 2022 to 2023, and volunteered as an associate editor for the Geological Society of America Bulletin between 2015 and 2021.
